PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

Map sources and limits

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.

Sources checked October 13, 2026. Based on official collection descriptions and published access instructions; no staff confirmation or onsite inspection.

Begin with the village and congregation.

Glandorf, Kalida, Fort Jennings, Ottoville, and other communities can lead to different parish and local-history collections. Record the township and historical place names alongside the surname.

This guide concerns Putnam County, Ohio. The local-history center, town list, and veterans compilation are different routes through the library; the church microfilms are held at BGSU outside the county.

STOP 01 / FUNERAL CARDS / PHOTOGRAPHS / NEWSPAPER MICROFILM

Mazie Hauck Frey Local History Center

Look for the family material that never reached a national database.

What you can find

The library’s center lists memorial and funeral cards, an indexed county photograph collection, family-history manuscripts, school yearbooks, cemetery inscriptions, and newspaper microfilm. Titles include the Kalida Venture, Kalida Sentinel, Leipsic Free Press, and Pandora Times.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Contact pcdllh@seolibraries.org or 419-523-3747 ext. 210. The center is at Putnam County District Library, 136 Putnam Parkway, Ottawa. Ask for an appointment when you need resource assistance.

A question you can ask

Do you have a funeral card, indexed photograph, or newspaper item concerning [family and years], and what source identifies the people?

Keep in mind

The published holdings list gives different coverage for each title. Most material does not circulate. Check the particular years, captions, copying arrangements, and current availability.

STOP 02 / PARISH REGISTERS / CONGREGATIONS

BGSU’s Putnam County church-record microfilms

The church records may be in Bowling Green.

What you can find

BGSU lists records for St. John the Baptist, Glandorf (1834–1995); St. Joseph, Fort Jennings (1848–2001); St. Michael, Kalida (1879–2001); and Immaculate Conception, Ottoville (1858–2001). Its list also includes Protestant congregations such as First Presbyterian, Columbus Grove (1836–1987).

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Use the county bibliography to identify a collection number, then ask the Center for Archival Collections at cac@libanswers.bgsu.edu or 419-372-2411 about consultation, copies, and restrictions.

A question you can ask

Which registers in [collection number] cover [person, sacrament or event, and approximate year]?

Keep in mind

The collection’s overall dates do not mean every register type covers every year. These are microfilm holdings; digital access and unrestricted copying were not established. BGSU is outside Putnam County.

STOP 03 / CIVIL WAR / COMMUNITY DOCUMENTS

Putnam County Historical Society Digital Collection

Explore local wartime material beyond a service-record search.

What you can find

Ohio Memory identifies this society collection as material about Putnam County and its communities, primarily relating to the Civil War and its regional impact.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Open the collection and examine individual descriptions, dates, creators, and references. Search a surname alongside a regiment, locality, or community organization.

A question you can ask

Does this item identify [person or community], and what original source and repository reference accompany it?

Keep in mind

The digital collection contains selected material rather than all society holdings. Check item-level rights and provenance before reproducing or using an identification.

STOP 04 / COMMUNITY HISTORY / MUSEUM INQUIRIES

Putnam County Historical Society Museum, Kalida

Ask who preserved the photograph or object.

What you can find

The Ohio Local History Alliance identifies the society in Kalida and provides its contact route. Ohio Memory confirms a related digital collection. These provide two starting points for asking about material not online.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

The Alliance lists 419-532-3008, pchs@bright.net, and P.O. Box 264, Kalida, OH 45853. Confirm current contact details, opening arrangements, and research access before visiting.

A question you can ask

Do you hold a dated photograph, object, or local publication associated with [family, school, or village]? Is donor or accession information available?

Keep in mind

A detailed museum research inventory was not verified. Use the collection description and a focused inquiry; do not assume employee lists, parish registers, or a public reading room are held here.

STOP 05 / FORMER SETTLEMENTS / POST OFFICES / RAILROADS

Historical towns and changing place names

A place may have changed its name while the family stayed put.

What you can find

The library’s six-page town list brings together township locations, settlement and platting dates, former names, post offices, and transport connections. It links Columbia and Pendleton with Pandora and includes vanished settlements such as Elm Center.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Find every version of the place name and record the relevant township and dates. Compare the entry with period maps, newspapers, and deeds.

A question you can ask

Which original map, plat, or newspaper supports the [former name] entry for [place and year]?

Keep in mind

This is a compiled list with abbreviations and occasional spelling variants. Search the page images as well as extracted text and verify specific dates independently.

STOP 06 / SERVICE / BURIAL / LOCALITY LEADS

Putnam County Civil War veterans compilation

Connect the veteran with the township and burial evidence.

What you can find

The library-linked compilation lists names, enlistment and muster information, regiment and company, rank, locality, vital dates, burial details, comments, and source references.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Search surnames and variants, then save the complete row and its reference codes. Ask the Local History Center how to resolve the codes and obtain the underlying source.

A question you can ask

Which records support [veteran’s] service, township connection, and burial entry?

Keep in mind

A compiled table can contain omissions or transcription errors. Confirm identity, dates, and service with original records; a missing entry does not establish that a person did not serve.

STOP 07 / DEEDS / NON-INDEXED RECORDS / HISTORICAL REFERENCES

Putnam County Recorder’s search guides

An older record may require browsing rather than a name search.

What you can find

The Recorder links an online record search, a guide to non-indexed searching, historical references, and a copy-request route.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Begin on the official site and read the search instructions for the relevant record. Preserve grantor, grantee, document type, date, volume, and page. Ask 419-523-6490 about coverage and copies.

A question you can ask

How can I locate and obtain the complete instrument at [volume/page], including related pages or plats?

Keep in mind

Online coverage varies; a search portal does not establish that every older document is indexed or imaged. Historical property descriptions should be compared with period evidence.

STOP 08 / MARRIAGES / ESTATES / ORIGINAL FILES

Putnam County Probate and court-record inquiries

Ask for the file that explains the relationship.

What you can find

The county’s court directory identifies Probate/Juvenile services and a route for marriage-license copies. It also provides public-record request contacts and case-inquiry links.

Research details & a question to ask

How to begin

Call Probate/Juvenile at 419-523-3012 to ask about a historical marriage or estate record. The Government Center is at 245 East Main Street, Ottawa. Supply exact names and an approximate date or case reference.

A question you can ask

Which surviving marriage or estate records cover [name and years], and how can I obtain the complete file?

Keep in mind

Historical date coverage was not established from the directory. Confirm the custodian, fees, access restrictions, and whether related papers survive before relying on a modern case search.

FOLLOW THE RECORD

Collection details and practical access

Research checked October 14, 2026. The notes below supplement the original guide. Catalog dates describe holdings; online access and copying arrangements can differ. No requests or purchases were made.

BGSU local-government microfilms

Collection and coverage

Common Pleas naturalization declarations, 1833–1915, are reel 86. Probate declarations, 1861–1902, are reels 39–40; naturalizations, 1861–1907, reels 40 and 151–153. Wills, 1837–1941, are reels 38–39, 55–63 and 92–93; a separate will index extends 1837–1996 on reel 87.

How to access it

Search both courts. Supply BGSU’s Center for Archival Collections the person, court, series, date and reel; its reading room is on Jerome Library’s fifth floor. The service page lists the first 30 minutes free, then up to two additional hours at $25/hour, with response estimated within ten business days.

Gaps and points to confirm

These are microfilm holdings, not online images. An index extending to 1996 does not extend filmed wills to that date. Restrictions on scattered burial-transit permits do not apply automatically to all records. Confirm current service costs.

Truro Cemetery record types

Collection and coverage

Pleasant Township’s Truro Cemetery interments, 1922–1985, are reels 3–4; deeds, 1922–1987, reel 3; burial/lot records, 1941–1998, reel 5.

How to access it

Ask BGSU for the specific record type and reel. Compare the interment entry with lot ownership rather than assuming the purchaser was the person buried.

Gaps and points to confirm

These ranges describe separate series. They do not demonstrate complete cemetery coverage or digitized images.

Library newspaper microfilm and obituary retrieval

Collection and coverage

The November 2024 brochure lists Kalida Venture 1845–1854, Kalida Sentinel 1855–1866, Continental News Review 1919–2013, Leipsic Free Press 1878–1982, Leipsic Messenger 1982–March 2018, Gazette 1892–1949, Pandora Times 1902–1995, and the combined Vidette/Pandora 1996–2009.

How to access it

Use the Ohio Obituary Index as a finding aid to the actual issue. Ask the Local History Center, 419-523-3747 ext. 210 or pcdllh@seolibraries.org, for the newspaper and date. Microfilm readers support USB scanning; the brochure lists paper copies at 25 cents and most material as noncirculating.

Gaps and points to confirm

“Current” in this 2024 brochure is not verified 2026 coverage. Issue-level gaps and end dates for continuing titles need confirmation.

Recorder index versus image access

Collection and coverage

The computerized index begins January 1, 1993. Document images require an Online Subscriber Form; the FAQ says there is no access fee.

How to access it

Start with the official FAQ, then decide whether to submit the subscriber form yourself. Retain instrument or book/page references when asking the office for an older copy.

Gaps and points to confirm

No form or account was created during research. Pre-1993 online-image coverage remains unknown; a nonindexed search option is not proof that all old documents are available.

Try one question: which parish served a family?

  1. Write down the household’s village, township, approximate years, and possible congregation.
  2. Compare former place names with the library’s town list.
  3. Identify the BGSU church collection and the particular register covering the event.
  4. Compare parish evidence with funeral cards, newspapers, deeds, and court records.
  5. Save witnesses, sponsors, associates, and conflicting dates for further investigation.

An inventory date range, a compiled table, and an original register provide different kinds of evidence. Preserve the collection number, register title, page, and exact wording.

PUTNAM COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Putnam County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.

Local newspaper runs and obituary indexes by title

The library lists Kalida Venture 1845–1854; Kalida Sentinel 1855–1866; Leipsic Free Press 1878–1982; Pandora Times 1902–1995; Continental News Review 1919–2013; and Western County News 1931–1947. A Continental Review obituary index covers 1919–2013.

How to access it

Ask pcdllh@seolibraries.org or 419-523-3747 ext 210 for the exact title/date. Research is at 136 Putnam Parkway, Ottawa; arrange assistance beforehand. Microfilm reading and USB scanning are available.

Evidence limit: Title spans do not guarantee every issue survives. An obituary index is separate from the newspaper. Search the correct successor or combined title when a year falls outside one run.

Court microfilm and local photograph leads

The center lists courthouse marriage records 1834–1951 and wills 1837–1941 on microfilm. It also has an indexed county photograph collection, funeral/memorial cards and school yearbooks.

How to access it

Request the relevant film and a complete entry, or ask staff to search a photograph subject and preserve its caption/source. Most holdings are non-circulating.

Evidence limit: A library film copy is not a certified county copy. Photograph, card and yearbook dates are not supplied in the brochure, so do not assign a broad year range to them.
