PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed 2026-11-01. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

City directories, diaries and community photographs

Collection details

Digitized city directories cover 1884–1920; later volumes from 1924 are held in the History Room. Carl R. Henry’s diary series spans 66 years, while Fred R. Trelfa’s files supply photographs and local-history articles.

What to confirm

Directory dates describe the published holdings span, not a volume for every year. Diaries and photographs are selective accounts, not complete resident lists.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Catholic extractions, Temple Beth-El and funeral registers

Collection details

Catholic extractions span 1864–1925 with parish-specific limits. The library also lists Temple Beth-El material, 1875–1954, and Evert-Hunter Funeral Home records, 1915–1943.

What to confirm

The Catholic index does not cover all events: St. Mary supplied burials only; St. Bernard baptisms end in 1894 and St. Anne in 1896. Ask what record types survive within each church collection.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Vessel histories and the City of Alpena logbook

Collection details

The maritime database connects vessel histories, photographs and archival references. The City of Alpena transcription includes trips in 1899–1902, cargo and named people. Start with a ship or trip, then investigate the people linked to it.

What to confirm

A vessel database is not a comprehensive crew or passenger index. Confirm a transcription against its source and ask whether the original entry can be consulted.

RESEARCH STOP 04

School, industrial and fishing history through museum objects

Collection details

The Green School building, Alpena Motor Car Company material, Besser Company exhibit and Great Lakes fishing vessels provide context for school and working lives. The online collection represents only a selection of museum holdings.

What to confirm

Schoolhouse and industry exhibits do not establish surviving pupil registers or employee files. Ask about a specific collection rather than assuming those records exist.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

ALPENA COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Alpena County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.
