Selected repository locations for present-day orientation. Numbers match the research stops below. Select a marker to open its stop. Locations are approximate, not entrances or driving directions. Grouped numbers identify nearby repositories; use the address key for individual locations.
Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries ↗. Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads ↗. Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 3, 2026.
Collection and access sources reviewed October 31, 2026. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.
RESEARCH STOP 01
One-room schools, family files and regional newspapers
Collection details
The Benson Room in Decatur lists the Bess Britton One-Room Schoolhouse Collection, family files, photographs, area yearbooks and historical platbooks. Newspaper microfilm covers communities including Covert, Decatur, Hartford, Lawton, Lawrence and South Haven.
What to confirm
The special-collection overview does not provide complete item dates. The Southwest Michigan obituary index is a separate finding aid, not a complete county death register. No continuous yearbook or school-record run is asserted.
RESEARCH STOP 02
Paw Paw commencement material and a class scrapbook
Collection details
The school inventory identifies 1894 commencement material, photographs and obituaries, plus a 1920 class scrapbook. It also lists school annuals, reunion photographs and one-room-school material. These class-specific items can offer leads beyond a database name search.
What to confirm
The two dates identify specific class material, not continuous student records. Missing annuals are not evidence of nonattendance. Inspect names and captions rather than assuming a photograph identifies every person.
RESEARCH STOP 03
Regional genealogy photographs, documents and maps in Hartford
Collection details
The society’s Genealogy Room holds photographs, books, documents and maps for southwest Michigan, including Van Buren and neighboring counties. This offers a regional route when a family’s records cross a county line.
What to confirm
This is a regional collection overview, not a verified series inventory. Ask for the particular source, coverage and reproduction terms; do not assume every county or period is equally represented.
RESEARCH STOP 04
Almena school inspectors, teacher contracts and correspondence
Collection details
The inventory lists a copy of the 1843 Almena school inspectors record, plus Almena township school teacher contracts, financial records, correspondence and inspectors reports. It names Eliza Downing as a teacher and A. S. Downing in connection with the school land.
What to confirm
Only the inspectors copy has an explicit 1843 date. Do not assign that year to all contracts or infer a complete district register.
RESEARCH STOP 05
A Paw Paw barber shop sales ledger, 1914–1924
Collection details
The inventory identifies Frank H. McLean’s Paw Paw barber shop sales ledger, 1914–1924. A business ledger offers a focused route into work and everyday transactions.
What to confirm
The inventory does not describe customer indexing or completeness. Inspect entries before assuming the book names every customer or documents residence.
Prepare one focused request
Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.
Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Van Buren County records.
A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.
Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
