PLAN YOUR RESEARCH ROUTE

Match the stops to the repository

Several stops can lead to the same repository. Maps show selected verified locations, not every guide stop or every community represented in the records. Use each stop’s access instructions, including for online and out-of-county collections. Check access before traveling.

County outlines: U.S. Census Bureau 2024 cartographic boundaries . Selected major roads: 2024 TIGER/Line primary and secondary roads . Public repository addresses checked against the sources above, with approximate Census geocoder positions. Unmatched addresses and out-of-county repositories are listed in the key rather than assigned a guessed position. Markers identify contact locations, not collection coverage. Historical boundaries, township lines and current traffic conditions are not shown. Prepared November 1, 2026.

Collection and access sources reviewed 2026-11-01. These are selected research routes, not complete county holdings or completed name-level searches.

RESEARCH STOP 01

School contracts, attendance and board records

Collection details

The school index separates township and district records: Arenac Township teacher contracts, 1883–1896; South Branch attendance, 1931–1937; and Riverside board records, 1917–1923.

What to confirm

Indexes are finding aids, not full record images. Do not assume every pupil or intervening year survives. Iosco County entries are separately labeled.

RESEARCH STOP 02

Road workers, township officers and health records

Collection details

Online indexes identify Lincoln Township bonds and oaths, 1880–1903 and 1911–1913; road-district records for 1904 and 1907; Whitney Township health records, 1904–1940; and 1914 Standish-Clayton road pay vouchers.

What to confirm

Separate volumes and isolated years must not be treated as one continuous series. Ask what each health-record entry records before interpreting it.

RESEARCH STOP 03

Church registers and local medical or undertaker records

Collection details

The archive inventory identifies Au Gres German-language Lutheran records, Catholic church material, John Petty’s medical ledger and Standish undertaker records.

What to confirm

No common date span is supplied. Ask about the exact congregation, language, restrictions and surviving volumes; do not equate an inventory entry with online access.

RESEARCH STOP 04

Omer records, school composites and community baseball

Collection details

The Omer site preserves city and township material, Masonic history, Northeast Michigan baseball memorabilia and Arenac Eastern school yearbooks and senior composites.

What to confirm

The 2017 school donation date is not the yearbook coverage. The baseball league’s 1916–1986 span is context, not an asserted complete roster run.

Prepare one focused request

Give the repository the locality, year, collection and specific question. Ask about the relevant volume or folder, gaps, access restrictions and copying costs. Save the citation and record what you searched, including searches with no result.

ARENAC COUNTY / SELECTED RECORDS COVERAGE

Which collections cover your years?

Use these dated holdings to choose a next search. This is a selection of cataloged collections, not a complete inventory of Arenac County records.

A range is a lead, not a guarantee. Bars show the dates stated by the cited catalog or inventory. They do not establish uninterrupted coverage, complete reporting or online image access. Unmarked years mean not represented in this selection, not that records were destroyed. Indexes and abstracts still need to be followed to the underlying record.

Sources reviewed November 1, 2026. Blue shows cataloged holdings; rust identifies indexes or compiled publications where the source specifies them. Read the format label and access notes for each row.

Confirm the historical jurisdiction as well as the date. A record may be held outside today’s county, and an inventory’s ending year does not mean recordkeeping stopped.
